Jindal SAW all set to diversify, to invest Rs 10,000 crore

STEELMAKER Jindal SAW plans a major push to its infrastructure business. The companyis setting up a modern wagon manufacturing facility in Gujarat that will roll out 2,000 special wagons in the first year staring from 2009. The company would subsequently manufacture 7,000 wagons in five years. The project is part of JSL’s major diversification plan in the infrastructure sector.

The company proposes to invest over Rs10,000 crore in next five years through its infrastructure focused holding company Jindal Infrastructure. Transportation, fabrication (JITF) to expand its business interest from steel to development of water, urban, shipping and rail infrastructure. The wagon operation would be undertaken by a subsidiary Jindal Rail Infrastructure Ltd. (JRIL) “wagon manufacturing is part of our strategy to have physical possession of assets for delivery of services rather than being a stand-alone service provider. The detailed project report for the wagon manufacturing unit has already been completed and we hope to commission the project by September 2009.,” JSL managing director Indresh Batra told ET.
