Containerised cargo throughput at New Mangalore Port received a boost with the commencement of a coastal service from Port Pipavav to New Mangalore Port.
Jindal Waterways commenced its container feeder service on July 27 with the arrival of m. v. Jindal Tara. The ship sailed out after dis-charging 70 TEUs within 4 hours, according to a New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) release.
Bhavani Shipping Services (P) Ltd was the agent and HML Agencies (P) Ltd the stevedore.
The vessel is proposed to be operated on the Pipavav-Mangalore-Cochin route regularly.
Container traffic at New Mangalore Port has been showing an upward trend, with an increasing number of exporters and importers using the Port.
So far, during the current fiscal, the Port has handled 11,500 TEUs, as against 8,814 TEUs in the corresponding period of 2008-09—recording an impressive growth of 30 per cent.
Mr P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, expressed happiness over the development and hoped that it would augment box traffic at the Port in the coming days.
